The Third Sunday of Ordinary Time marks a significant moment in the liturgical year as we hear the accounts of Jesus beginning his public ministry. The Church has designated this Sunday as the "Sunday of the Word of God," emphasizing the importance of Sacred Scripture in the life of faith.
After his baptism and temptation in the wilderness, Jesus emerges with a clear mission. The Gospel of Matthew records this pivotal moment when Jesus begins to preach in Galilee:
"From that time, Jesus began to preach, and to say, 'Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.'" — Matthew 4:17
This message of repentance and the nearness of God's kingdom would define his entire ministry. Jesus does not begin with complicated theology or abstract philosophy—he calls people to turn their hearts back to God because something new and wonderful is breaking into the world.
One of the most compelling aspects of this Sunday's readings is Jesus' call of his first disciples. Walking by the Sea of Galilee, he sees Simon Peter and Andrew casting their nets:
"He said to them, 'Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men.' They immediately left their nets and followed him." — Matthew 4:19-20
The immediacy of their response is striking. They did not ask for time to consider, did not request more information, did not delay to settle their affairs. They simply followed. This radical obedience becomes the model for all discipleship.
The Third Sunday of Ordinary Time challenges us to consider our own response to Christ's call. Like Peter and Andrew, we are invited to leave behind whatever holds us back and follow Jesus without hesitation. The kingdom of heaven is still at hand—God's transforming presence is still breaking into our world through Christ and his Church.
