Fifth Sunday of Easter

The Fifth Sunday of Easter deepens our understanding of the Christian life in light of the resurrection. The readings often focus on themes of abiding in Christ, bearing fruit, and the new commandment of love.

"I Am the Vine"

Jesus' teaching about the vine and branches is frequently read on this Sunday:

"I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." — John 15:5

This image captures the intimate union between Christ and his followers. We draw our life from him as branches draw life from the vine.

Abiding in Christ

The key word is "abide"—to remain, to dwell, to stay connected. Jesus repeats it throughout his teaching:

"Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me." — John 15:4

Christian life is not primarily about doing but about being—being connected to Christ, remaining in his love.

Bearing Fruit

Those who abide in Christ bear fruit. This fruit includes:

  • The fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
  • The fruit of good works: acts of mercy, justice, and love
  • The fruit of souls: others brought to Christ through our witness

Apart from Christ, we can do nothing of lasting value.

The New Commandment

Another common reading features Jesus' new commandment:

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." — John 13:34-35

Love is the mark of resurrection life.

The Growing Church

Acts continues to show the Church expanding, filled with the Spirit's power, facing challenges but growing through them all.
