The Sixth Sunday of Easter falls in the final days before the Ascension. Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure, promising the gift of the Holy Spirit and the continuation of his presence through the Advocate.
As Jesus prepared to return to the Father, he promised his disciples that they would not be left orphaned:
"I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever: the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive, for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him." — John 14:16-18
The Holy Spirit would continue Christ's presence and work in the world.
Jesus links love with obedience:
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments." — John 14:15
Love for Christ is not merely emotional but practical—expressed through faithful obedience to his teaching.
Jesus distinguishes his disciples from the world:
"the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive, for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him. You know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." — John 14:17
The Spirit is a gift to those who believe, not a possession of the unbelieving world.
This Sunday marks the beginning of the end of Eastertide. The Ascension approaches (Thursday or the following Sunday, depending on local practice). Jesus' earthly ministry is concluding, but his heavenly ministry is about to begin.
Jesus offers his disciples a peace the world cannot give:
"Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful." — John 14:27
This peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of Christ through his Spirit.
