The Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time continues Jesus' teaching about possessions and priorities. Building on the parable of the rich fool, Jesus calls his disciples to trust in the Father's provision and invest in eternal treasure.
Jesus addresses the anxiety that possessions often create:
"'Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom. Sell what you have and give gifts to the needy." — Luke 12:32-33
The Father's generous intention is not to deprive us but to give us the kingdom itself. In light of that gift, earthly possessions pale in significance.
Jesus then reveals a profound principle:
"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." — Luke 12:34
We often think that where our heart is, we put our treasure. But Jesus reverses the order. Our hearts follow our investments. If we invest in earthly things, our hearts become earthly. If we invest in heavenly things, our hearts become heavenly.
Jesus then speaks of watchfulness and readiness:
"'Let your waist be dressed and your lamps burning. Be like men watching for their lord when he returns from the wedding feast, that when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him." — Luke 12:35-36
The master could return at any time. Faithful servants stay ready.
The Nineteenth Sunday challenges us to examine our investments—not just financial, but of time, energy, and attention. What are we building? What will last? True security is not found in accumulating earthly wealth but in trusting the Father who gives us his kingdom and investing in treasure that cannot be lost.
