Queenship of Blessed Virgin Mary

Heaven's Queen

The memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated on August 22nd — exactly one week after the Solemnity of the Assumption — proclaims a truth that the Church has held from the earliest centuries: that Mary, the Mother of God, reigns as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This royal dignity is not a medieval invention or a pious exaggeration but flows directly from Mary's unique role as Mother of the King of Kings. Established as a liturgical feast by Pope Pius XII in 1954, the Queenship of Mary crowns the arc of Marian feasts in August and invites the faithful to honor the woman whom God Himself has exalted above all creatures.

Biblical Foundations

The scriptural basis for Mary's queenship is deeply rooted in the Old Testament tradition of the Queen Mother, or Gebirah. In the Davidic kingdom, the queen was not the king's wife but his mother. She held a position of honor and influence, seated at the king's right hand and serving as an intercessor for the people.

"Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. The king rose up to meet her and bowed himself to her, and sat down on his throne and caused a throne to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand." — 1 Kings 2:19

If Solomon, a merely earthly king, honored his mother in this way, how much more does Christ the eternal King honor His Mother? The angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary confirms the royal lineage:

"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." — Luke 1:32-33

Mary is the Mother of the eternal King. By the logic of the Davidic covenant, she is therefore the Queen Mother of His everlasting kingdom.

The Witness of Tradition

The Church Fathers and early Christian writers consistently honored Mary with royal titles:

  • Saint Ephrem the Syrian (4th century): Called Mary "Lady" and "Queen" in his hymns
  • Saint Gregory Nazianzen (4th century): Referred to Mary as "Mother of the King of the universe"
  • Saint John Damascene (8th century): Proclaimed that Mary was made "Queen of every creature"
  • Medieval art and devotion: Countless icons, mosaics, and paintings depict the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven
  • The Litany of Loreto: Includes over a dozen royal titles for Mary, including Queen of Angels, Queen of Patriarchs, Queen of Apostles, and Queen of Peace

Pope Pius XII and the Feast

On October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII promulgated the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam ("To the Queen of Heaven"), formally establishing the feast of the Queenship of Mary. He summarized the theological basis for the doctrine:

Mary is Queen because she is the Mother of God, who is King of the universe. She is Queen because she played a unique role in the work of redemption, cooperating with her Son's saving mission. And she is Queen because of her surpassing holiness, which exceeds that of all angels and saints combined.

The feast was originally placed on May 31st but was moved to August 22nd during the liturgical reforms following the Second Vatican Council, creating a beautiful connection with the Assumption celebrated on August 15th. Mary's bodily assumption into heaven naturally leads to her crowning as Queen — for she who was taken up body and soul now reigns in glory.

The Nature of Mary's Queenship

Mary's queenship is unlike any earthly monarchy. It is characterized not by domination but by service, not by power for its own sake but by maternal love:

  • She reigns through intercession, bringing the needs of her children before the throne of God
  • She reigns through example, showing all Christians the path of humility and obedience
  • She reigns through compassion, extending her maternal care to every soul
  • She reigns through participation in Christ's own kingship, which is a kingship of truth, life, holiness, grace, justice, love, and peace

An Invitation to Honor Our Queen

The Queenship of Mary is a source of great consolation for the faithful. We do not have a distant or indifferent queen but a Mother who loves us with a love that surpasses all earthly affection. To honor Mary as Queen is to acknowledge that God's plan of salvation includes a feminine, maternal dimension — a Queen Mother who intercedes for her children with a tenderness and persistence that never tires. In crowning Mary, God crowns all of redeemed humanity with hope, for where the Queen has gone, her children are invited to follow.
