Twenty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Twenty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time presents Jesus' teaching on humility, given at a banquet where he observed guests scrambling for places of honor. His words overturn worldly notions of status and success.

Watching the Guests

Jesus is invited to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees. As a keen observer of human nature, he notices behavior that reveals hearts:

"He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them," — Luke 14:7

The guests were jockeying for position, seeking the most prestigious seats at the table. This scramble for status revealed their values.

Take the Lowest Place

Jesus offers counter-cultural advice:

"'When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the best seat, since perhaps someone more honorable than you might be invited by him, and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, ‘Make room for this person." — Luke 14:8-9

Instead, Jesus recommends:

"But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you." — Luke 14:10

The Kingdom Principle

Jesus then states a principle that echoes throughout his teaching:

"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." — Luke 14:11

Living in Humility

The Twenty-Second Sunday challenges our instinct for self-promotion. In God's kingdom, the way up is down. Those who grasp for honor lose it; those who embrace humility receive true honor from God himself. The lowest place at the earthly table may be the highest place in the kingdom.
