Thirty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

The Thirty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time presents Jesus' teaching on the resurrection in response to a challenge from the Sadducees. This encounter reveals profound truths about life after death and the nature of the God we worship.

The Sadducees' Challenge

The Sadducees, who denied any resurrection, approach Jesus with a hypothetical case designed to make belief in resurrection seem absurd:

"They asked him, 'Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up children for his brother." — Luke 20:28

They construct a scenario of seven brothers who each marry the same woman after the previous one dies. "In the resurrection, whose wife will she be?"

Jesus' Response

Jesus corrects their misunderstanding on multiple levels:

"Jesus said to them, 'The children of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage." — Luke 20:34-36

The resurrection life is not simply an extension of earthly life but a transformation into something new and glorious.

The God of the Living

Then Jesus makes his most powerful argument:

"But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord ‘The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.'" — Luke 20:37-38

Living in Resurrection Hope

The Thirty-Second Sunday affirms that death is not the end. The God we worship is the God of the living, not the dead. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob still live to him—and so will we. This hope transforms how we face death and how we live each day.
