Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena - Day 1

Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena - Day 1

Opening Prayer

O God, Father of mercies, who placed your people under the singular protection of your Son's most holy Mother, grant that all who invoke the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe may seek with ever more lively faith the progress of peoples in the ways of justice and of peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

The Apparition at Tepeyac Hill

On a cold December morning in 1531, the humble indigenous man Juan Diego walked across Tepeyac Hill toward catechism class. There he heard music like the singing of many precious birds, and a voice called to him from the summit. The Nican Mopohua records his encounter:

"Juanito, Juan Dieguito... Where are you going?" He answered: "My Lady, my Queen, my Little Girl, I am going to your house at Tlatelolco to pursue the things of God."

She revealed herself as the ever-Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God. She asked that a temple be built on that hill so that she might show her love, compassion, and protection to all who dwell in this land and to all who call upon her.

Prayer

Most Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, you appeared on Tepeyac Hill to bring the light of the Gospel to the peoples of the Americas. Just as you called Juan Diego by name, you call each of us to draw closer to your Son. Help us to hear your voice amid the noise of this world and to respond with the same trust and humility that Juan Diego showed. Through your intercession, may we walk always in the path that leads to Christ. Amen.

The Memorare to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Remember, O most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in your celestial apparitions on Tepeyac Hill you promised to show your compassion and pity toward all who, loving and trusting you, seek your help and call upon you in their necessities and afflictions. You promised to hear our supplications, to dry our tears, and to give us consolation and relief. Never has it been known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly to you, O Mary, Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer us. Amen.

Closing Prayer

Holy Mary of Guadalupe, Mystical Rose, intercede for the Holy Church, protect the Holy Father, help all who invoke you in their necessities. Since you are the ever-Virgin Mary and Mother of the True God, obtain for us from your most holy Son the grace of keeping our faith, sweet hope in the midst of the trials of life, burning charity, and the precious gift of final perseverance.

Hail, Holy Queen...

St. Juan Diego, pray for us.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!
