This novena honors the apparition of Our Lady at Knock, Ireland in 1879, where the Blessed Virgin appeared with St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist.
O Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope to your people in a time of distress and comforted them by your presence. You appeared in silence, yet your message was powerful beyond words. Be with us now as we pray, and intercede for us before the throne of your Divine Son.
On the evening of August 21, 1879, in the small village of Knock, County Mayo, fifteen witnesses beheld an extraordinary sight: the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the gable wall of the parish church, along with a lamb upon an altar and a cross. Yet not a single word was spoken.
"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10
In a world that demands explanations and thrives on noise, Our Lady of Knock teaches us the power of silence. She did not speak because her presence was the message. She stood among her suffering people — the Irish, ravaged by famine and poverty — and simply showed them that heaven had not forgotten them. Sometimes God's most powerful communication comes not in words but in presence.
O Our Lady of Knock, you appeared in silence, and yet your message reached the ends of the earth. Teach us the value of silence in our own prayer. Help us to be still before God, to listen before we speak, and to trust that His presence is enough. When words fail us and we do not know how to pray, stand beside us as you stood at Knock, and let your silent presence be our prayer.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you appeared in silence and spoke volumes to our hearts. Help us to find God in the silence. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
