Novena to St. Bernadette - Day 1

Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

St. Bernadette Soubirous, humble visionary of Lourdes, we ask your intercession with confidence. You who were chosen by the Blessed Mother to receive her message, pray for us before the throne of God.

Simple Peasant Girl

Bernadette Soubirous was the most unlikely of visionaries. Born in 1844 in Lourdes, France, she was the eldest daughter of a family so poor they lived in a former jail cell — the only lodging they could afford. She was small, sickly with asthma, uneducated, and unable to memorize even the simplest catechism lessons.

"but God chose the foolish things of the world that he might put to shame those who are wise. God chose the weak things of the world that he might put to shame the things that are strong." — 1 Corinthians 1:27

Yet it was precisely this simple, poor, uneducated peasant girl that the Blessed Virgin Mary chose to appear to — not a bishop, not a theologian, not a noblewoman. God's ways are not our ways. He delights in choosing the lowly to confound the mighty, the small to reveal the great. Bernadette's simplicity was not her weakness — it was her greatest qualification. Her pure, uncomplicated heart was the perfect vessel for the message of heaven.

Prayer

Lord God, through the intercession of St. Bernadette, give me a simple and humble heart. Strip away my pride, my pretensions, and my need to be impressive. Help me to understand that You choose the lowly, the small, and the hidden to accomplish Your greatest works. May I be content to be nothing, so that You may be everything.

Prayer for Humility

St. Bernadette, you were poor in everything the world values — wealth, education, health, status. Yet you were rich in the one thing that matters: a pure heart open to God. Teach me this poverty of spirit. Free me from the need to be important. Help me to find my worth not in what I have or what I achieve, but in the fact that God loves me. Through your intercession, make me small enough for God to use. Amen.

Closing Prayer

St. Bernadette, simple and humble servant of God, pray that we may embrace the littleness that makes room for God's greatness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Bernadette, pray for us!
