Novena to St. Cecilia - Day 1

Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O God, who year by year gladden us by the feast of St. Cecilia, grant that we may be inspired by the example of this virgin and martyr who pleased you by her courageous witness and her devotion to your divine praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Virgin Martyr

St. Cecilia is one of the most celebrated virgin martyrs of the early Church, honored in the Roman Canon of the Mass since ancient times. According to tradition, she was a noble Roman woman who consecrated her virginity to God and was martyred for her faith during the persecutions of the second or third century.

"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." — Matthew 5:10

Cecilia's life embodies the union of purity and courage. She lived her consecration to Christ in the midst of a pagan world and sealed her faith with her blood. Despite being condemned to death by suffocation in her own bathhouse and then struck three times with a sword, she lingered for three days, distributing her possessions to the poor and encouraging the faithful.

Dear St. Cecilia, virgin and martyr, you who gave your life so heroically for Christ, inspire me with your courageous faith. Help me to live my commitment to God with the same wholehearted devotion you showed, even unto death. Intercede for me especially for (mention your intention). Amen.
