Novena to St. Dominic - Day 1

Novena to St. Dominic - Day 1

Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

St. Dominic de Guzman, founder of the Order of Preachers, we turn to you with confidence. You who were set aflame with zeal for the salvation of souls, intercede for us before the throne of God.

Founder of the Order of Preachers

In the early thirteenth century, St. Dominic saw a Church in crisis. Heresy was spreading, the faithful were confused, and many clergy were ill-equipped to preach the truth. Rather than despair, Dominic responded with a revolutionary vision: an order of learned, holy men who would combine deep contemplation with powerful preaching.

"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'" — Isaiah 52:7

In 1216, Pope Honorius III approved the Order of Preachers — the Dominicans. Dominic's friars were different from other religious of their day: they were mendicants who begged for their bread, scholars who studied Sacred Scripture and theology, and preachers who went out to meet the people where they were. Within Dominic's lifetime, the Order spread across Europe, and his sons would include St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Catherine of Siena, and countless other luminaries of the faith.

Prayer

Almighty God, through the intercession of St. Dominic, raise up preachers of truth in our own time. As Dominic founded an order dedicated to proclaiming Your Word, inspire men and women today to study, contemplate, and share the saving truth of the Gospel with a world that desperately needs it.

Prayer for Preachers

St. Dominic, you saw the need of the Church and responded with courage and vision. Pray for all who preach the Gospel — priests, deacons, catechists, parents, and teachers. May they be grounded in prayer, formed by study, and set ablaze with love. Through your intercession, may the Word of God be proclaimed with power. Amen.

Closing Prayer

St. Dominic, founder and father of preachers, pray that the Church may never lack zealous proclaimers of the truth. May your Order continue to bear fruit for the salvation of souls. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Dominic, pray for us!
