Novena to St. Ignatius of Loyola - Day 1

Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O God, who raised up St. Ignatius of Loyola in your Church to further the greater glory of your name, grant that we may follow his example on earth and share his glory in heaven. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Conversion of the Soldier

Inigo Lopez de Loyola was a vain, ambitious soldier devoted to military glory and worldly honor. In 1521, a cannonball shattered his leg at the Battle of Pamplona. During his long recovery at Castle Loyola, he asked for chivalric romances to pass the time but was given instead a Life of Christ and a collection of saints' lives. These books transformed his soul.

"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?" — Mark 8:36

As Ignatius read about the saints, he noticed something extraordinary: worldly daydreams left him empty, while holy desires filled him with lasting joy. This was the beginning of his spiritual discernment and the seed of the Spiritual Exercises. The wounded soldier became a soldier of Christ, exchanging his sword for the Cross and his ambition for the greater glory of God.

Prayer

Dear St. Ignatius, you who were converted through suffering and the reading of holy books, pray for me that I may be open to God's surprising ways of transforming my life. Help me to recognize the movements of grace even in my wounds and setbacks. Intercede for me especially for (mention your intention). Amen.
