Novena to St. Philomena - Day 1

Opening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O God, who among the other miracles of your power have granted even to the weaker sex the victory of martyrdom, mercifully grant that we who celebrate the heavenly birthday of St. Philomena, your virgin and martyr, may by her example draw closer to you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Virgin and Martyr

St. Philomena is honored by the Church as a virgin and martyr, a young woman who chose death rather than surrender her purity or her faith. According to tradition, she was a Greek princess who consecrated her virginity to God and was martyred under the Emperor Diocletian for refusing his advances and his demand to renounce Christ.

"Don’t be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life." — Revelation 2:10

Though she was barely a teenager, Philomena displayed a courage and faith that surpassed her years. She endured arrows, scourging, and drowning, yet God preserved her life through each torment until she finally received the crown of martyrdom. Her story reminds us that holiness knows no age and that God's grace empowers even the youngest saints.

Dear St. Philomena, virgin and martyr, you who gave your life for Christ at such a tender age, inspire me with your courage and purity. Help me to be faithful to God in every circumstance and to defend my faith without fear. Intercede for me especially for (mention your intention). Amen.
