Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary

The Solemnity of Saint Joseph, celebrated on March 19th, honors the foster father of Jesus and spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Joseph stands as the model of humble, faithful service and is venerated as the patron saint of the Universal Church, workers, fathers, and a happy death.

The Just Man

Scripture describes Joseph as a "righteous man" (Matthew 1:19). Though he speaks no recorded words in the Gospels, his actions reveal a man of profound faith, obedience, and love.

When Joseph discovered Mary was pregnant, he faced an agonizing decision. Rather than expose her to public disgrace, he resolved to divorce her quietly. But an angel appeared in a dream:

"But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 'Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit." — Matthew 1:20-21

Joseph obeyed immediately.

Guardian of the Holy Family

Throughout the infancy narratives, Joseph acts as protector and provider:

  • He brought Mary to Bethlehem for the census
  • He was present at Jesus' birth and circumcision
  • He presented Jesus in the Temple
  • He fled to Egypt to save Jesus from Herod's massacre
  • He brought the family safely to Nazareth
  • He searched for the 12-year-old Jesus lost in Jerusalem

The Hidden Years

Joseph raised Jesus in Nazareth, teaching him the carpenter's trade. For approximately thirty years, the Son of God lived in obedience to Joseph and Mary in hidden family life. This gives profound dignity to ordinary work and family living.

Patron of the Universal Church

In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph the patron of the Universal Church. Pope Francis, in his apostolic letter Patris Corde (2020), declared a special Year of Saint Joseph and highlighted his:

  • Beloved fatherhood
  • Tender and loving care
  • Obedience to God's will
  • Creative courage
  • Quiet strength in daily work
  • Acceptance in the shadows

His Death

Tradition holds that Joseph died before Jesus' public ministry began, as he is not mentioned during that time. The Church believes he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, making him the patron of a happy death.
